Takao Abe
Born in 1972. U.S. University of Rio Grande Art major
He has loved drawing and painting since his childhood and aimed for becoming an artist.
As he was deeply impressed by the notion of BAUHAUS, which persists that all the forms of art are to be aggregated into architecture, he started his career as an architectural designer and has created hundreds of shops, clinics, and houses and buildings.
Midcentury style has especially drawn his professional/artistic attention. He has built an extensive knowledge of it (including architecture, interior design, furniture, lighting, music, and even fashion) throughout his architectural career.
In 2008, he started creating modern art and publishing his works. Based on his experiences in the field of architecture, he has come to notice that the artworks placed in modern-style rooms are the vital factor for the architecture itself.
In 2009, he won 34th Kokubi Art Prize of the governor of Tokyo and 34th
Kokubi Art Prize of the Honorary President. In 2017, he participated in ART STAGE SINGAPORE 2017. From 2014 to 2016, his works were exhibited at the Tokyo office of Lombard Odier, Swiss private bank.
Now he creates more than 100 works a year and publishes them at the solo exhibitions 3 times a year.
“The beauty of minus, substraction” eliminating an unnecessary decoration is the essential element of Takao Abe’s artworks. He also depicts his original ideas of universe, nature, and mind.
Above of all, he persists in his roots, Japan.
He says “No one is wearing Chonmage hair style (Samurai warrior’s hair style) anymore, but every single Japanese still has a certain type of mindset deep inside. I like to draw their spiritual nature in my paintings.”
Another authentic Japanese value, “the spirit of tea”, also has kept inspiring him. Japanese cherish the beauty of nature and take it as it is. For example, they deliberately scatter the fallen leaves on the path all the way through to a tea ceremony room after they sweep and clean it without any dusts. They think it is more likely to be a state of nature than the clean path without any fallen leaves.
His respect to the Japanese beauty leads to his way of drawing lines and circles, all by his hands without rulers.
His originated style of diptyque, triptych, and multiple pieces of canvas connected with staplers, is an homage paid to Japanese folding portable artworks, for example, Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s portable tearoom set.
